I like Rob Zombie's Halloween films, the House Of Wax remake and My Soul To Take, all commonly disliked films by the greater horror community. I know this is a broad generalization but what horror films do you like that you seem to be in the minority on? Share your shame!

House of Wax is pretty fun, indeed. So is the Thirteen Ghosts remake.

Black X-Mas and Sorority Row and really fun modern slasher remakes.
And I love Franics Ford Coppola's Twixt, which most people despise.
I do not, however, like his Dracula very much. But I do love Kenneth Branagh's Frankenstein!

Uh, bam! Nail meet hammer. I almost put the Black Christmas remake on there but I figured House Of Wax would show that I meant business. Great call on Sorority Row. I like that one a lot as well.I haven't seen Twixt but I do love Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula. I just like the ridiculousness of typing all of that out. Feel free to elaborate on Dracula.

I loooove the Sorority Row remake as well as the Black Christmas remake. I think they are a ton of fun. I seem to have some sort of inexplicable affinity for Jason X, which I'm guessing probably puts me in the minority. I'm not saying it's a great film. I'm just saying that I like it. There, I've said it. Shame shared.

DeleteI definitely have some films that I feel pretty alone when I admit to loving them but then again I don't really talk to people much. One title that got thrown out here in the comments so far is Black X-Mas. I really, really look forward to that film every December. And of course, those Rob Zombie Halloween remakes are wondrous. I do like the House of Wax remake but haven't watched it in a loooong time.
ReplyDeleteSomething of a gem that no one gives two shits about is Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama but I totally understand. Dracula 2000 gets a lot of love in my house (thanks mostly to my wife who loves it) and it has definitely grown on me over the years. Speaking of vampires, I rather like John Carpenter's Vampires too. Jason Goes to Hell is a new favorite. I had been avoiding this one for years and when I finally watched it, I loved it! I am a huge fan of the Tomie films and I think they don't get enough love. Michele Soavi's The Sect needs a whole buttload more attention; a seriously neglected Italian horror film.
An indie favorite of all time is one that I champion is Freaky Farley. I think more people should see it.
I also look forward to the Black Christmas remake every year. Vampires!

I don't know what the general opinion of Rodriguez' The Faculty is these days, but I quite like that one.
And, seriously, John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars. Love it (and Vampires, I think, but it's been a long time.)
Seems like I gotta watch that House of Wax remake!

Richard was talking about The Faculty the other day. I haven't seen that in forever. I firmly stand behind My Soul To Take. Let the derision rain down upon me! The House Of Wax remake isn't the best thing ever but I do like it.

ReplyDeletePlus one for Jason X and Jason Goes to Hell... and, I might actually be alone with this one but while we're on the subject I really like Jason Takes Manhattan, despite and maybe because it's a bit of a cheat... I like the atmosphere of all the boat stuff basically.

Gonna have to check out the House of Wax and Black Christmas remakes... and a quick confession... I've never seen the original House of Wax (gasp!)
Not sure what else, may have to think about this a bit... though, for one thing, I think I prefer Nightmare of Elm Street 4 to fan favourite 3 these days, which probably makes me a heretic.
Carpenter's The Ward as well. That got one or two somewhat positive notices but still...
I'm another one for Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars! I really don't get the hate for it. I think there's plenty of vintage Carpenter elements mixed in that elevate it to the level of a really fun second tier JC flick.
ReplyDeleteI also have a soft spot for Mother of Tears. The witches, atmosphere and gore are great. To me it feels more like a goofy Lamberto Bava movie (circa Demons), and taken on those terms, rather than comparing it to Suspiria and Inferno, it makes for a fine not-so-guilty pleasure.
Finally, even though I know he has a healthy fanbase, I've never understood the abject hatred from so many in the horror community for Eli Roth's films. I think they're all fantastic, that he's a real master craftsman, and I can't wait for Green Inferno to hit!
I don't get the hate for Eli Roth either. He doesn't get talked about much in my circle but I don't dislike him or any of the films of his that I've seen. This is coming from a Rob Zombie fan. I understand irrational hatred. Is it because he is a 'fanboy made good'? I'm not sure. Maybe? I mean he put Edwige Fenech in Hostel 2!
ReplyDeleteHostel Part 2 is my favourite of his films. I like the Deodato cameo too. You might be onto something with the "fanboy made good" thing, in which case it just sounds like sour grapes. He can have a slightly obnoxious personality in public life too, but who cares? I'm interested in artist's work, not their public (or private) personas.
ReplyDeleteI like Zombie as a director as well. Devil's Rejects and Lords of Salem are VERY good films, and I admire the rest of his work because of his unflinching dedication to doing what he wants without compromise.
The Lords Of Salem was my favorite horror film of last year, beating out The Conjuring which I loved. And I felt that it was different from his Halloween films and folks wouldn't just rely on their hate for them in trashing Salem. I was wrong.
ReplyDeleteBrad had to prompt me on one I was forgetting. The NOES remake. I'm pretty sure I was the only person that liked it. That being said, I am wondering if it will hold up at all with more viewings. My second viewing was not so great though for some reason, I still like it. Friggin' micro-naps!
ReplyDeleteI liked/tolerated the remake! But after having read and listened to so many negative reviews I dread a second viewing as well. Perhaps I had simply exhausted all my hatred for the Friday The 13th remake...
